Remember all those possibilities that I mentioned last week for my own extended readathon – along with Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon on Oct. 26 – at the end of the month because I’ll be recuperating after knee surgery?
Now forget them.
Because that’s what I’m doing.
Every so often, at least once or twice a year, I start with a clean slate and that time has come again. To that end, along with scrapping all those possibilities mentioned last week, I’ve returned everything that I’ve checked out, both physically and virtually. I’ve also canceled all my holds.
Why?
Because once again I discover that I’m not reading what I want to read – at least not what I want to read right now. Either I’m reading what others want me to read or books I think I should read. I look at the stack of books on my desk and the ebooks on my Kindle…and I sigh. So as of today, I’m pushing the reset button on my reading. What will I read next? I don’t know yet, but after I figure it out and have read it, I’ll let you know.
I agree. Whenever I find reading a burden, I realize it’s because I’m not reading for me. 🙂

And it’s not necessarily that I don’t want to read those books, just maybe not now.

Good for you, Bryan! I do the same thing periodically… usually once (sometimes twice) a year. Getting to the maximum number of ebook holds without remembering why I even put one on the list is what usually pushes me to that point. I like just wandering through the library then, picking out whatever appeals, and actually reading whatever ‘sticks’… good luck with both the reset and your upcoming knee surgery.

I’m sort of doing that, wandering through the library, physical and virtual.

I did just that at the start of summer and I’m sticking with it until the end of the year. My weekly update

Have you got a favourite author? Maybe you try one of those ‘if you like so and so, try so and so things’ , or pick ten books randomly off the library shelves and choose whichever one appeals most, if none do, try again.
Wishing you a great reading week, and good luck with your search.

I might try that. Thanks for the advice.

If you aren’t feeling it, you aren’t feeling it. It’s shocking, it’s scary, it’s like trying to walk right up to the edge of a cliff…but it’s the best thing to do. And when you’ve done it, wiped everything away, sent everything back out into the world, it’s refreshing, invigorating.
And then something wonderful will arrive.

I hope so anyway.

Sometimes it just has to be done. Nothing wrong with wiping the slate and reading toward changed interests!

The thing is I just don’t know what I want to read besides nothing too heavy. Life is heavy enough.

You may deserve one but that doesn’t mean you’re getting one. 🙂

That’s so interesting because I think, in this moment, I’m the exact opposite.
I’m sitting here with nothing to read because I don’t have any ebook holds waiting for me and can’t seem to choose anything for myself out of my physical bookshelves or Goodreads shelves. I feel like I need the library to just SEND me something and make me read it.
Anyway, I just find it interesting that sometimes we have to reset with a clean slate and sometimes we need someone to tell us what to read. Or I do, anyway.
I hope whatever your next read is, it’s 100% perfect for you!
