All Things Wise and Wonderful

I am writing this from here:

When I finally finish All Things Wise and Wonderful by James Herriot today, it will be my 11th book of the year. I started the series last January and have continued to make my way through it slowly while reading a few other books. I had a couple of other books I had planned to read during my “birthday month,” which starts June 1. I am turning 50 on June 9 and while in previous years, I had celebrated my birthday for a weekend, then a week, then a month, I think this year at half a century, the month-long celebration is, or at least might be, well deserved. However, I think now that I’m going to continue reading Herriot’s series that ends with The Lord God Made Them All and Every Living Thing, starting this coming long Memorial Day Weekend for me and continuing throughout June and probably July.

Next Sunday, I’ll do my “normal” Pushing Forward Back post to wrap up the end of the month and look ahead to the next month. In addition to continuing through the Herriot series during my birthday month, I also have planned a wine trip with my wife and am going to have a giveaway here on the blog (more details to come on my birthday). Stay tuned. In the meantime, if you missed my last post, visit it here: What We’re Watching Wednesday | The Short Season Shows, Part 1, if you’d like. I’ll leave you with a little chill music from Guido, my chill friend from the Netherlands, what I listened to as I wrote this post:

What about you? Any big plans for the coming weekend for those of you in the States who have off Memorial Day? Any big plans for you regardless of where you are for the summer (or the winter, depending on the hemisphere you’re reading this from)? Any good books included in those plans?

  1. We have an opportunity to hit Palm Springs over Memorial Day weekend but I am thinking we will skip it. I am just worn out and packing, even for a short stay, is stressful for me. Especially when we have the pup in tow. Plus, my son has to work one of those days so I am thinking we will just stay home and grill. I want to do a few projects too and at least look for a new sofa for the family room and sometimes stores have sales holiday weekends. My couch was fine until someone tore it. No one is fessing up.

Reading. I am feeling a little overwhelmed with the reading. I don’t stress about review copies but there is one discussion book I have yet to even start, Pachinko, and another book I need to read for something else and I am not in the mood for either one of them.

  2. I always believe in a birthday month!! No plans for Memorial Day — we have some travel coming up and need to get ahead on everything over the holiday weekend.

    1. We have no plans on going anywhere, but will be nice to just sit back and relax — for me anyway. Kim works Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday to start the day (midnight shift). Myself? Just plan on reading and not going anywhere.

  3. I think a month-long birthday celebration sounds like a great idea!
We don’t have any big plans for Memorial Day Weekend. Debating going up to the lake, but probably won’t happen.

  4. My step-mother is having her ninetieth birthday next weekend, and to celebrate her kids are throwing her a big party. She will enjoy that very much. And so will we.

I was able to finally let go of so much when I turned fifty (more than twelve years ago). I never dreamed that it could feel so good to be so old. I wasn’t expecting that at all.

I think it’s a fabulous idea to read the Herriot books for your birthday month. BTW, my husband and I joke to each other a lot about celebrating our birthday months, but, honestly, we do celebrate in little ways all month. I think there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, I think it’s an earned reward. Goodness knows, there are few rewards for getting older in our society.

I suggest you have an appropriate giveaway for your birthday. How about giving away fifty books? Wouldn’t that be lovely?

    1. Happy (early) birthday to your stepmother. Enjoy the party.

I’m starting to get that feeling of letting go, but I’m not quite there yet…in a few weeks, though. πŸ˜‰

I just wish (sometimes) my birthday wasn’t in June. So busy. But at least we’re getting away the weekend of my birthday.

50 books would be lovely, but I have five books so far. I’m thinking maybe 10 realistically.

  5. Glad you’re going to continue Herriot’s series into your birthday month and beyond. I have fond memories of the series, even though it’s been close to 30 years. We’re wrapping up here in FL this week and will start north after Memorial Day. Our plan (at the moment, subject to change) is an overnight in Savannah, then a couple of nights around Richmond, My husband wants to visit some of the Civil War battlefields in that area. Have a good week, Bryan!

    1. I was wondering when you were going to head back up this way. You might (or might not) have mentioned before, what lake in the Finger Lakes do you leave near? We’re going to Seneca in June. As for plans, they always are subject to change. πŸ™‚
